Chapter 21

Bureaucracy is a dirty word. I don’t care that it has its place and there are positives to it. The negatives rarely outweigh them. Why, by the Stars, does such a thing as paperwork exist in this era?!

I see it as proof that there are divine beings out there amongst the cosmos, and that they HATE us.

“I can’t get over the view!” Lila crowed, bouncing happily against the railing. Her bright, cyan eyes glimmered inquisitively as she watched the escort ships of the Valor’s Bid slip past in the exterior void.

Raegan was right next to her, but leaning against the railing with her back to the exterior view instead.

“Yeah. It is something special for sure.” Desmond leaned back into Chloe’s hip. Sasha was on his right this time, tapping away at her data tablet, her striped feline tail flicking idly behind her.

“’Something’ doesn’t encompass it! Do you realize the kind of damage a single one of the Scion-class battlecruisers can do? Let alone what an Imperatrix battleship is capable of?” Lila wiggled like an excited puppy as she stared avidly into space. “Stars and Void! It might even have been worth the surgery risks to get the cranial port to pilot one of those behemoths!”

“Regretting becoming a guard already?” Raegan poked the bouncing purple-blue elf lookalike in the side lightly, getting a squeak of surprise and a flurry of return pokes that Raegan did her best to dodge while grinning broadly.

Of all the members of Desmond’s team, the one that Lila had bonded with the strongest was Raegan. They shared a level of energy that the rest of the team struggled to match‌.

Desmond thought it was good to see someone give Raegan a run for her money in the energy department. The Uth’ra woman had an easier time sitting still and studying after properly exhausting herself.

The good-natured poking match devolved into grappling rapidly. It ended when Raegan was able to get hold of the smaller woman and pin her arms to her sides in a one-armed bear hug. This was unfortunate, since Raegan had managed to keep one hand free enough to tickle the wriggling Aelfa.

“Ahaha! I give! I give!” Lila cried, her ears flicking frantically as she tried to wiggle free, but Raegan’s strength — and the fact she had the other woman wedged under her sizable bust — meant that Lila would remain trapped until Raegan had mercy.

When it became obvious that Raegan wasn’t feeling merciful, Desmond stepped in. “I think she gets it, Rae.”

Obediently, Raegan released Lila. The shorter woman dropped to the decking with a grunt. She stumbled slightly before catching herself and whirling to mock-glare up at Raegan.

“I would never regret joining this team! I may appreciate the battlecruisers and the idea of what they represent, but adepts and what they do to maintain the safety of the Hegemony as a whole make them heroes!”

“Easy there, Lila,” Raegan said gently to her, not losing her smile in the least.
